Collection: Joost Baljeu

Joost Baljeu (1925, Middelburg – 1991, Amsterdam) was a Dutch artist renowned for his abstract geometric art. Initially trained as a painter, Baljeu was influenced by the De Stijl movement and artists like Piet Mondriaan and Theo van Doesburg. He began his career with realistic landscapes and still lifes but shifted to a constructivist approach in the 1950s, creating abstract reliefs with colorful, spatially dynamic elements.

Baljeu’s work often mirrors the methods of Mondriaan and Van Doesburg, focusing on geometric abstraction and the integration of painting, sculpture, and architecture. He abandoned painting to concentrate on reliefs, using colored planes arranged perpendicularly to enhance their spatial quality.
